Policies to Promote Affordable Housing.
In February, 2002, the Center co-sponsored this day-long conference with the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The event featured presentations of scholarly research from academic institutions across the country and panelist and discussants from prominent housing agencies, developers, and nonprofit organizations.
Forum on Immigrants to New York City: Their Housing and Neighborhoods.
In 1998, the Center co-sponsored with the Fannie Mae Corporation and the Fannie Mae Foundation a one-day conference on issues of housing and immigration. Original research was presented by James Carr, John Pitkin, Dowell Myers, Samatha Friedman, Emily Rosenbaum and Michael Schill. Afternoon break-out sessions focused on issues affecting individual immigrant communities. The keynote speaker was Harvard Professor Nathan Glazer.
Panel on the Impact of the Rent Regulation Reform Act of 1997.
In 1998, the Center co-sponsored with the Bar Association of the City of New York, an evening panel on the impact of the recently enacted Rent Regulation Reform Act of 1997. Speakers included DHCR Commissioner Joseph Lynch, Rent Stabilization Association President Joseph Strasburg, Andrew Scherer of Legal Services for New York and the Honorable Fern Fisher-Brandveen, Administrative Judge of the Civil Court of New York.
Conference on the Future of Rent Regulation.
In 1996, as the New York State Legislature was debating the future of rent regulation, the Center co-hosted with the Rent Guidelines Board a conference on the future of rent regulation. At the conference four papers were presented including the first estimates of how much rents would likely change as a result of vacancy decontrol. The conference's keynote speaker was New York City Comptroller Alan Hevesi.
Conference on Housing and Community Development in the New Fiscal Environment.
Eight papers on housing and community development issues were presented by a variety of experts at this conference in 1995. The keynote speaker was Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Andrew Cuomo. The papers were subsequently edited by Professor Michael H. Schill and published as Housing and Community Development in New York City: Facing the Future (State University of New York Press 1999).
